Goldman Sachs said the stock market performance has been driven by company specific factors rather than the macroeconomic environment, and the Wall Street firm identified a host of names that it said offer the most attractive microeconomic setups. The investment bank used a so-called " dispersion score " for each S & P 500 stock to identify "the best stock-picking opportunities going forward." It's important to note that stocks with high dispersion scores reflect a large alpha opportunity , but not necessarily in one direction or the other, meaning a stock can have outsized outperformance or underperformance. Goldman found that among the 11 S & P 500 sectors, consumer discretionary and technology groupings offer the best stock picking opportunities based on their dispersion scores, while real estate and utilities have the lowest scores, hence less chance of generating alpha. Stocks with the highest dispersion scores in the benchmark stock index are Monster Beverage , DexCom , Akamai Technologies , Centene and Align Technology , according to Goldman.

Washington, DC CNN —Americans racked up a record amount of credit card debt in 2023, soaring past a trillion dollars. “Consumers still have a lot of money left over to be able to spend, so the credit card data is often misinterpreted,” Russell Price, chief economist at Ameriprise Financial, told CNN. According to a LendingTree analysis of more than 350,000 credit reports, the average unpaid credit card balance was $6,864 in the fourth quarter. Overall, US household debt (including credit card balances) rose to a new high of $17.5 trillion in the fourth quarter, up 1.2% from the prior three-month period. So, while there certainly isn’t a shortage of economic hurdles bedeviling people’s budget — and credit card debt has surged — the big picture indicates that, so far, Americans (and their economy) remain healthy.

Further uptake of the blockbuster weight loss drugs rocking the health-care world can bode well for select energy drink makers and fitness-focused retailers, Stifel said. Indeed, Stifel found an additional 21% said they would be interested in the drug if it showed proven results, was widely available and had approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for weight loss specifically. Wegovy was approved to treat weight loss in 2022 and Eli Lilly's Zepbound recently received that same nod . These shifting food and health habits can also affect consumer spending — and stocks tied to specific retailers, Astrachan said. If half of those interested in GLP-1 drugs begin taking them, the firm expects U.S. energy drink consumption could increase about 2%.

It's time to buy spirits stock Brown-Forman , according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley's previous underweight call was based on limited visibility around gross margin recovery, the company's full valuation and slower U.S. spirits industry growth. However, Serotta now expects meaningful upside for the stock. Agave, which is used to produce tequila, has been a disproportionate headwind to the company's general margins over the last several years, Serotta said. Monster energy drinks are seen for sale in a motorway services shop, Reading, Britain, January 25, 2019. REUTERS/Peter CziborraAug 3 (Reuters) - Monster Beverage Corp (MNST.O) missed Wall Street estimates for second-quarter sales on Thursday as higher cost of living weighed on demand for its pricier energy drinks and alcohol brands, sending its shares down 3.4% after the bell. Consumers have curbed non-essential spending as disposable incomes remain pressured by rising interest rates and higher food prices. Like Coca-Cola (KO.N) and PepsiCo (PEP.O), Monster Beverage also implemented price hikes as it fights pressures from higher raw material costs and labor expenses. Net sales rose to $1.85 billion from $1.66 billion a year ago, compared with analysts' average estimate of $1.87 billion, according to Refinitiv data.
